The Difference Between Modern And Contemporary Art
To many people, the only difference between modern art and contemporary art is when the piece was created. They think that anything created after the middle of the 20th century is automatically contemporary art and that pieces from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century are modern. In addition, many feel that contemporary art is that which is created by an artist living during this period. However, there are other differences as well. For this reason, some artists like to say the piece was done in a modern-art style but completed during the contemporary era. Here are some things that make these two types of art different in style and technique.
Modern Art
Modern art was first called this because it used techniques and styles that had not been previously seen. It did not just take previous styles and expand on them but instead was something new entirely. The pieces were designed to be aesthetically pleasing and beautiful. They could be very simple or complex in their creation, but they were meant to show something real, even if the reality was a bit distorted.
Contemporary Art
Contemporary art has a different style and beginning completely. While it may use new or innovative materials and techniques, it may also use common ones. The big difference is that contemporary art is more about the feelings and emotions of both the artist and the viewers. Performance art and conceptual art are two subtypes of contemporary art. A contemporary piece is not always pleasing to look at, but it evokes a feeling in people. Viewers want to understand what the piece means, and artists are looking for a way to express ideas more than simply beauty. Quite often, the piece does not resemble anything until you are able to feel it inside. Of course, different people will come away with different ideas and feelings about a piece of contemporary art, and that is okay, too. The artists want everyone to feel something when looking at their work.
You may visit art galleries that are dedicated to either modern or contemporary artists and their work. However, if you want to truly understand the differences between the different genres, it would be a good idea to visit a place that has many genres and types of art. As you walk through the exhibits, you will learn which type of art you prefer and can then seek out dedicated galleries and shows for your enjoyment.
